Digital nomad permit: a short stay for remote workers
Ruta de residencia · Residencia transitoria como nómada digital
El requisito
Esta guía está escrita en inglés hasta que su versión en castellano tenga la misma revisión legal. A continuación, el texto en inglés.
¿Es tu caso?
You work remotely for people or companies outside Argentina, and you want to live here for a while. This is the nómada digital (digital nomad) permit.
It is a short stay. It is residencia transitoria (transitory residence), not temporary residence. It gives no DNI (ID card). It does not lead to permanent residence, and its time does not count toward it.
It is open only to nationals of countries that do not need a tourist visa for Argentina. We have confirmed that citizens of Ireland, the UK and the US do not need one. For any other passport, check with the nearest Argentine consulate before you plan on this route.
If you want to stay long term, you need a different route. If you live on income from assets you own, read the rentista page. Income from your own work does not count there, even when it is paid from abroad. A family tie, a place to study or an Argentine employer may also open a route: see the family, student and work pages.
El requisito
Your work. The permit is for people who provide services remotely, by computer or telecoms, to people or companies based outside Argentina. You show proof of that work: a contract, a letter from the company, certifications, or income and fee receipts. You also need at least 1 reference from your work, and a signed application describing your work, with a short CV.
Your passport. Only nationals of countries that do not need a tourist visa for Argentina can use it.
Income. Migraciones (Argentina's immigration authority) publishes no minimum income for this permit. Treat any figure you read elsewhere with caution.
Working for Argentine clients. The permit covers remote work for people or companies abroad. Under the migration law, transitory residents generally may not work otherwise, unless Migraciones authorises it. Ask before you take on an Argentine client or employer.
How long it lasts. Up to 180 days. Migraciones describes it as extendable for the same period. The Migraciones page states no limit on extensions. The regulation behind it, Disposition 758/2022, allows one extension. Whether it can be extended again is not clear.
The extension. Disposition 758/2022 lists what you show to extend: a valid passport, proof of income from your services during the stay, an Argentine criminal-record certificate, and proof that you were in Argentina for at least 50% of the first period.
The rule. Article 24 h of the migration law, Ley 25.871, and Migraciones Disposition 758/2022.
Qué vas a necesitar
- A valid passport from a country whose nationals do not need a tourist visa for Argentina.
- Proof that you entered Argentina legally.
- Proof of address in Argentina.
- A signed application describing your independent work, with a short CV.
- Proof of your remote work: a contract, a letter from the company, certifications, or income and fee receipts.
- At least 1 reference from your work.
- The Argentine criminal-record certificate, if you are 16 years or over. The national criminal-records registry issues it to foreigners aged 18 years or over, and it is valid for 5 business days from receipt. We need to check how a younger applicant gets it.
- An apostille on each foreign document, or legalisation by the Argentine consulate in the country that issued it.
- A Spanish translation of each document that is not in Spanish, by a traductor público (sworn translator) in Argentina, legalised by the translators' college (Colegio de Traductores).
Cuánto tarda
Migraciones publishes no fixed decision time, and we found no reliable figure for this permit. Nobody can promise you one, and we do not.
Filing in Argentina. This permit is not filed in RADEX, the online system used for other residence routes. You file in person, and you must be in Argentina. In Buenos Aires City the process starts by email to Migraciones. Elsewhere you go to the local Migraciones office, the delegación. We have not confirmed the current email address, so check it on the Migraciones page before you write.
Filing from abroad. You can apply before you travel instead, through the TIE 24H (electronic entry application). Migraciones lists an application letter, a CV, an image of your passport, a recent photo on a white background, and proof of work with a reference. The entry authorisation arrives by email, and you show it at the border. You must be outside Argentina when you file. If the system detects you inside Argentina, you cannot continue and the fee is lost.
How long you can stay. Up to 180 days, and the same again if an extension is granted. We have not found whether the days run from the grant or from your entry, or where the extension is filed. Ask Migraciones before you plan your dates.
Cuánto cuesta
You pay any government fee yourself, directly. We never collect government fees.
We have not confirmed the fee for this permit from a source we can cite. Migraciones sets its fees in UMSM units, currently worth ARS 1,000 (about USD 1 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026) each, and publishes them in its fee table. Check the amount with Migraciones before you file.
The fee for applying from abroad through the TIE 24H is also unconfirmed. The TIE 24H is paid in 2 parts: the first by credit card, the second at the bank named for the consulate you choose.
The Argentine criminal-record certificate costs from ARS 1,000 (about USD 1 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026) to ARS 8,500 (about USD 6 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026), paid to the national criminal-records registry, depending on how fast it is delivered.
Other costs:
- Apostilles, paid in each country that issues a document. Prices vary by country.
- Sworn translations. The translator sets their own fee. A simple legalisation of each translation at the translators' college in Buenos Aires City costs ARS 33,000 (about USD 21 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026) per document, paid to the college.
We charge nothing for this guide. You file and pay everything yourself. If you need a lawyer, you choose them and pay them directly.
Dónde se equivoca la gente
- Treating the permit as a way to settle. It gives no ID card, and its time does not count toward permanent residence.
- Taking work from Argentine clients or an Argentine employer without asking Migraciones first. The permit covers remote work for people or companies abroad, and transitory residents generally may not work otherwise.
- Relying on an income figure from another website. Migraciones publishes no minimum.
- Spending too long outside Argentina. Under the regulation, an extension needs presence in Argentina for at least 50% of the first period.
- Counting on more than one extension. The regulation allows one. The Migraciones page states no limit, so ask before you plan on more.
- Filing the TIE 24H from inside Argentina. You cannot continue, and the fee is lost.
- A criminal-record certificate that has lapsed by the time you file. The registry's certificate is valid for 5 business days from receipt.
- A foreign document without its apostille or consular legalisation, or a translation not made by a sworn translator in Argentina.
- Assuming your partner or children are covered by your permit. We have not found a source we can cite on what status they need. Ask before you travel.
A qué lleva
This permit does not lead to permanent residence. The permanent residence page counts years of temporary residence. This permit is transitory, so its time does not count.
While it lasts. You can stay up to 180 days, and the same again if an extension is granted. Transitory residence gives no DNI.
After that. To stay longer, you need a different residence. The routes that lead to permanent residence are temporary ones, such as rentista, family, student or work. Whether you can apply for one without leaving Argentina is not clear. Ask before your permit ends.
Tax. Ask an accountant whether time on this permit counts toward Argentine tax residence. We have not found an answer we can cite.
