What makes Spanish in Buenos Aires sound different: vos instead of tú, the sh sound for ll and y, the soft s, the Italian lilt, and the tenses people use.

People in Buenos Aires speak Rioplatense Spanish, the Spanish of the River Plate region. If you learned Spanish somewhere else, two things will stand out at once: people say vos (you) instead of tú, and ll and y sound like "sh".
Here are the main features, one at a time.
Vos is the informal way to say "you" to one person in Argentina, in place of tú. It is standard usage, not slang, and it is not looked down on.
The verb forms change with it. Some examples:
| With tú | With vos | English |
|---|---|---|
| tú amas | vos amás | you love |
| tú pierdes | vos perdés | you lose |
| tú vives | vos vivís | you live |
| tú eres | vos sos | you are |
In amás, perdés and vivís, the stress falls on the last syllable, and a written accent marks it.
Commands change too. You will hear hablá (speak) and vení (come).
For "you" when speaking to more than one person, Argentines use ustedes in place of vosotros.
In Rioplatense Spanish, ll and y merge into one sound, a "zh" or "sh". So yo sounds like "sho", and calle sounds like "cashe".
This is called sheísmo. It began around Buenos Aires and has spread.
At the end of a syllable, the s is often aspirated: it comes out as a breath, closer to a soft h than a hiss.
The intonation of Rioplatense Spanish resembles that of Italian. Linguists trace it to the turn of the twentieth century, when Italian immigration to Buenos Aires was at its height.
The 2025 decree that rewrote the migration rules contains no language test or integration requirement. But much of the paperwork, and daily life, happens in Spanish.
