Irish link: DocumentedRodolfo Jorge Walsh was born in 1927 at Choele Choel, now Lamarque, in Río Negro. His paternal grandparents were Miguel Walsh (1866–1910) and Catalina Dillon, which SILAS treats as documented Irish descent, though no county has been traced. He first attended the Irish school at Capilla del Señor and then boarded at the Instituto Fahy, an Irish-community school in Moreno. Tiempo Argentino and a Planeta biography put his Irish schooling in 1937 to 1940, while argentina.gob.ar says he boarded at the Fahy from 1941. The Fahy is the setting of his "Serie de los irlandeses": "Irlandeses detrás de un gato", "Los oficios terrestres" and "Un oscuro día de justicia" (1967–70), to which Juan José Delaney adds "El 37". A library named after him now occupies a former dormitory described in the stories.
His Operación Masacre (1957) pioneered Argentine investigative non-fiction; Delaney notes that it preceded Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. SILAS also states that he was a Montoneros intelligence officer.
On 24 March 1977, by Edmundo Murray's dating, or 25 March, by the Argentine government's, a year after the coup, he published his "Open letter from a writer to the military junta", which Gabriel García Márquez praised. On 25 March 1977 an ESMA task group shot and abducted him in an ambush at San Juan and Entre Ríos avenues in Buenos Aires. His remains were never returned, and he is listed among the disappeared. The research has not yet checked the ESMA trial verdicts that cover his case.
