Also known as Marion McMurrough Murphy, Mrs M. G. Mulhall
Irish link
Irish link: ReportedMarion Mulhall, née McMurrough Murphy, was the wife of Michael George Mulhall, co-founder of The Standard. SILAS, which records her within her husband's entry, gives no birth date or birthplace, so her own Irish origin is not stated and her link is graded reported. She died in Kent on 15 November 1922.
She wrote travel books from the River Plate. SILAS lists From Europe to Paraguay and Matto-Grosso (1877), Ten Years of a Lady's Travels in the Pampas (1881) and, late in life, Celtic Sources of the Divina Commedia (1908). Laura Izarra, in Ilha do Desterro (2010), reads her 1881 travel book, which she titles Between the Amazon and Andes, alongside Kathleen Nevin's novel You'll Never Go Back and Barbara Peart's memoir Tia Barbarita as Irish women's voices from Argentina. The two titles given for 1881 have not been reconciled; we give both as the sources name them.
The research overview lists her with her husband and brother-in-law among the people who carry the story of the Irish press in Buenos Aires: The Standard, the Handbook of the River Plate and travel writing.
Published sources give different versions. Here is each one with its source, and the wording we use.
