Source: Hurling Club website (read 11 Oct 2026), 11 October 2026(opens in a new tab)The Hurling Club is at Av. Coronel de San Martín 5415, Hurlingham, west of Buenos Aires. By its own account and the Irish Government's, it traces its roots to 1922 and the founding of the Irish Hurling Federation of Argentina. La Nación's centenary feature dates that to August 1922; the club's first president was James Patrick Harte of Co. Cork, the Irish Times reported in 2017. Other sources give other dates: a 1918 federation rulebook is displayed at the GAA Museum in Croke Park, King and Darby date the federation to August 1920 and the club's reorganisation to 1946, and GAA.ie says the club was established in 1925. The suburb's name comes from the English Hurlingham Club of 1888, not from hurling.
Hurling was played regularly until the 1940s, when hurleys could no longer be imported. The club took up hockey, rugby and cricket; rugby dates from 1941, and hockey is now its top sport. Its main grounds opened on 25 May 1948, according to La Nación, and the clubhouse burned on 14 February 1955. In 2023 the club had about 1,700 members, many not of Irish descent, and its president, Gastón López Soler, was the first without an Irish surname.
Gaelic games have revived. The club fields men's and women's Gaelic football teams weekly and sent teams to the GAA World Games in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023; Argentina won the Men's Shield in Abu Dhabi in 2015. The club holds a St Patrick's Day party and has direct ties with the Irish embassy.
