Ennis, Co. Clare, is the home town of the O'Gormans of Buenos Aires. Dr Michael (Miguel) O'Gorman was born in Ennis in 1749 according to Patrick McKenna and Edmundo Murray, though one mirror site, seen only in a search summary, gives 1736. Trained in France and Spain, he left Spain for Buenos Aires in 1777 under a royal order and stayed until his death in 1819. An Argentine medical-history editorial says he promoted the creation of the Protomedicato, the body that licensed doctors, surgeons and pharmacists, with Viceroy Vértiz in 1780, drafted the first regulations of the medical school and held its chair of medicine. A 2015 RAMI lecture notice calls him the founder of modern medicine in Argentina.
Thomas O'Gorman, a merchant, was related to the doctor. Most sources describe him as born in Ennis around 1760 and a soldier of the Walsh Regiment, but Murray's entry on Camila says he was born in Mauritius, and McKenna calls him Michael's cousin. He married Anne Perichon de Vandeuil, "La Perichona", later Viceroy Liniers's lover, and was in Buenos Aires by the 1790s. Their granddaughter Camila O'Gorman eloped with a priest in December 1847 and was executed on Rosas's orders on 18 August 1848, aged about 20.
The Irish-born headmaster Patrick Fitzsimons co-founded Springfield College in Ennis in 1843 before opening schools for the Irish of Buenos Aires from 1862. Clare supplied about 3 per cent of the male emigrants in Nally's survey.
