It is a replica of the house Admiral William Brown built by the Riachuelo. According to the Argentine government's page on the site, Brown bought land in Barracas and La Boca between 1812 and 1814 for his house and orchard. The house was seized after his unauthorised privateering campaign in the Pacific and was recovered at the end of 1821.
The replica was provided for by Law 21.586 of 1977 and handed to the navy on 22 June 1978, the date of Brown's birth. It houses the Instituto Browniano and the navy's department of historical studies. Brown's Irish biographer, John de Courcy Ireland, wrote in 2001 that the site of the Casa Amarilla is now the Instituto Browniano.
Sources differ on the dates of the Pacific campaign that cost Brown the house. The navy's biography puts it from late 1815 to mid-1816; the government's Casa Amarilla page says 1815 to 1817. The research for this site did not confirm the location of Brown's principal monument in Buenos Aires, and one claim in the project brief, a Brown house in Adrogué, could not be confirmed by any source.
