Irish link: DocumentedMateo Banks was born on 18 November 1872 at the estancia El Trébol in Chascomús, Buenos Aires province, according to the SILAS dictionary entry by Edmundo Murray. His father, Matthew Banks, had emigrated from Dublin in 1862. Chascomús was the first Irish sheep district in Argentina: the historian Patrick McKenna says the Irish first took land there, south of the city, before moving north-west as more fertile land opened between the Salado and Paraná rivers.
Banks is in this register for a crime. SILAS records him as a family murderer, sentenced to life imprisonment on 3 April 1923. He died in Buenos Aires in 1949. The dictionary entry is the only source this site has read on the case. It has not been checked against court records or the Argentine press of the time, so we state only what SILAS states and add nothing about the victims or the circumstances.
