José Luis Baxter
Irish link
Irish link: ReportedJosé Luis "Joe" Baxter was born on 24 May 1940 at Marcos Paz. SILAS places him in an Anglo-Irish Protestant family, probably with an Irish-born grandfather, and that is as far as his Irish link has been traced, so it is graded reported.
He was secretary-general of Tacuara, a far-right Catholic nationalist group. SILAS records that the group raided the Soviet consulate, synagogues and Jewish institutions. He later moved to the revolutionary left. The research does not describe that second career in any detail, and no other source has been opened on him.
He died on 11 July 1973 in the crash of a Varig airliner near Paris Orly and was buried in the British cemetery at Chacarita.
The people register notes that Baxter, John William Cooke and Camila O'Gorman show that the community's history includes uncomfortable figures. It includes him, following SILAS's critical approach, with neutral wording and only what Edmundo Murray's SILAS entry supports.
