Also known as Dr Cecilia Grierson
Irish link
Irish link: ReportedCecilia Grierson was the first woman in Argentina to qualify as a doctor. That is how Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs describes her, calling her an Irish-Argentine physician, and a 2026 Canal 26 feature on the Irish traces of Buenos Aires says she had an Irish mother. No source opened for this site gives her dates, her mother's name or county, or the course of her career, so this page says no more about her life until a biography is read. Her Irish link is graded as reported: descent is stated, but its origin is not traced.
Her name travels today through an Irish scholarship. The Ireland Fellows Programme offers fully funded one-year master's degrees in Ireland to early and mid-career professionals, and its Latin America strand includes the Cecilia Grierson Award in Equality, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine and is open to applicants in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. The programme is administered by the Irish Council for International Students. The first Latin America Fellows, in 2023–24, came from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador, and the Embassy of Ireland's diaspora pages say the award gave two fully funded master's scholarships from 2023. Whether the award continues beyond 2026 had not been checked when this page was written.
