How Argentina's simplified tax regime for small earners works, what it costs, and what to settle before you invoice as a foreign resident.
The monotributo (simplified tax regime) lets small earners pay one fixed monthly fee that covers tax, a pension contribution and an obra social (health fund). As a foreigner, check your right to work first, and ask an accountant whether you can register before you take on work.
Your right to work comes from your residence status. The migration law sets it out.
A precaria (temporary residence certificate) lets you stay, leave, re-enter, work and study while Migraciones decides your file.
Tourists may not do paid work without authorisation from Migraciones.

If you sell goods, the monthly fee runs from ARS 49,527 (about USD 32 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026) in category A to ARS 702,103 (about USD 460 at ARS 1,540 on 6 October 2026) in category K.
Our sources do not give the caps or fees for the other categories. An accountant can tell you which one fits your income.
Your tax number with ARCA (the tax authority) is the CUIT (tax ID).
Under ARCA's resolution RG 5803/2025, foreigners without an Argentine ID card can ask for a provisional CUIT. It is valid for up to 2 years.
We could not confirm whether a provisional CUIT is enough to join the monotributo. Ask an accountant before you register.
Migraciones has reportedly asked for monotributo payments as evidence of income.
To become a permanent resident you must prove medios económicos suficientes (sufficient economic means). The standard is not published. An NGO, CAREF, reports that the test is also being applied when people renew temporary residence or the DNI. It reports that 3-6 months of monotributo payments, not on the social tier, have been asked for as one kind of evidence.
These are reports, not published rules. Keep every payment receipt.
Registering for the monotributo does not answer whether Argentina taxes all your income, including income from abroad. Read When Argentina may start taxing you.
If you invoice clients abroad, ask your accountant how the Central Bank's rules on bringing export income into Argentina apply to you.
Speak to an accountant before you register or send your first invoice. If you are still choosing how to move, the Route Finder shows the routes you may fit. If you work remotely for clients abroad, read the digital nomad route.
